ABOUT CAMP HICKORY HILL

Since 1972, we've provided a medically sound, education-rich summer camp experience for children and teens with type 1 diabetes. We are the only diabetes camp in Missouri that does not turn away any child due to an inability to pay.

To sustain a community, culture, and medically sound program of support for persons with diabetes - especially children - using our camp environment to foster education, self-reliance, confidence, an active lifestyle, and skill in the successful management of diabetes.

Every child, adolescent, and family living with diabetes is empowered with the confidence, knowledge, skills, and self-reliance to thrive and live healthy, fulfilling lives.

Key Responsibilities

Governance & Strategic Leadership 

  • Participate in developing and reviewing the camp's mission, vision, and long-term strategic goals

  • Attend and actively participate in all scheduled board meetings (second Monday of each month at 6:00 PM CST via Zoom)

  • Review and vote on organizational policies, annual budgets, and major decisions

  • Ensure the organization operates in compliance with its bylaws and all applicable laws

  • Provide oversight of the Executive Director and Camp Director and support their success

  • Participate in the annual evaluation of organizational performance

Financial Stewardship 

  • Review and approve the annual operating budget

  • Monitor the organization's financial health through regular review of the Treasurer's reports and financial statements

  • Ensure resources are used effectively and in alignment with the mission

  • Support the annual financial review or audit process

  • Identify and help mitigate financial and operational risks

Annual Board Member Engagement — Choose One Each Year 

All board members fulfill one of the following options per calendar year. There are no exceptions, including for officers. 

Option A — Fundraise: Raise a minimum of $1,500 in new or renewed gifts to Camp Hickory Hill through peer-to-peer outreach, personal asks, or a self-organized event. The camp will provide a giving page, tools, and staff support to help you succeed. 

Option B — Volunteer at Camp: Serve for one week of a camp session (typically one week each June or July) in an assigned role — cabin counselor, kitchen support, program development, or another area matched to your skills. This is the most direct way to connect with the mission and the campers you govern for. 

Option C — Grow Our Donor Base: Personally introduce and cultivate at least 5 new donors to Camp Hickory Hill, each making a first-time gift of $100 or more during the calendar year.

Fundraising & Development (Beyond Annual Commitment) 

  • Actively support camp fundraising events, campaigns, and donor stewardship year-round

  • Leverage personal and professional networks to identify prospective donors, sponsors, and partners

  • Serve as a visible and vocal ambassador for Camp Hickory Hill in the community

  • Assist in identifying and pursuing grant opportunities and community partnerships

Committee Participation 

  • Serve on at least one board committee

  • Contribute meaningfully to committee projects and deliverables

THE ROLE OF A BOARD MEMBER

The Board of Directors is the governing body of Central Missouri Diabetic Children's Camp, Inc. Board members are elected volunteers who shape the strategic direction of the camp, ensure sound financial management, support fundraising, and serve as ambassadors for our mission.

Board service is a meaningful commitment of time and talent. Members are expected to bring professional expertise, personal passion for the mission, and a collaborative spirit to advance our camp's impact for every child who needs us.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Board service requires an estimated 5-10 hours per month, which may vary by season and role.

Full Board Meetings: Second Monday of each month at 6.00 PM CST via Zoom

Committee Meetings: 1-2 per month depending on committee

Fundraising Events: Attendance and active support at major annual fundraising events
